A Call for Action: Turkey and 52 Nations Demand UN Arms Ban on Israel

Turkey has put forth a letter to the United Nations, supported by 52 countries and two organizations, demanding an immediate ban on arms sales to Israel due to the worsening situation in Gaza.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has declared that it has presented a letter to the United Nations seeking an end to arms deliveries to Israel, with the support of 52 countries and two international organizations. This move, highlighted by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at a press conference in Djibouti, addresses the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Fidan asserting that supplying arms to Israel is tantamount to endorsing genocide. The letter has garnered backing from various nations, including Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and China, as well as support from the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. This initiative follows a previous appeal by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the UN, urging it to take action against the escalating violence in the region.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that it has formally submitted a letter to the United Nations, co-signed by 52 countries and two major international organizations, calling for an immediate halt to arms deliveries to Israel. This initiative is part of Turkey’s ongoing efforts to address the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip.

At a press conference held in Djibouti during the Turkey-Africa partnership summit, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan elaborated on the letter’s contents and significance. He stated, “We have written a joint letter urging all countries to stop the sale of arms and ammunition to Israel. This letter, which has 54 signatories, was delivered to the UN on November 1.” Fidan underscored the urgency of the situation, asserting that “selling arms to Israel means participating in its genocide.” He emphasized that this initiative was spearheaded by Turkey, reflecting the nation’s commitment to advocating for peace and justice in the region.

The letter has garnered support from a diverse coalition of countries, including notable signatories such as Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Algeria, China, Iran, and Russia. Additionally, the letter was endorsed by two prominent international organizations: the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. This broad coalition underscores a growing international sentiment against arms sales to Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

This latest push for an arms embargo comes in the wake of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s appeal last month, in which he urged the UN to impose such measures as a means of addressing the humanitarian crisis and violence in the Gaza Strip. Erdogan characterized the arms embargo as an “effective solution” to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent further bloodshed.

The situation in Gaza has drawn widespread condemnation from various countries and organizations, leading to increasing calls for accountability and a reassessment of military support for Israel. Turkey’s proactive stance, highlighted by this joint letter, aims to galvanize international support for an arms embargo and foster a concerted effort to achieve lasting peace in the region.
