The joint presidential candidate of the Turkish opposition, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has said that if he becomes the president, he will establish the “Organization of Peace and Cooperation in the Middle East”. The organization will have four members, namely Türkiye, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
“We have decided to establish the Organization of Peace and Cooperation in the Middle East. Why can’t Türkiye, Iran, Iraq and Syria come together?”, said Kılıçdaroğlu.
Except Türkiye, all other three countries are ruled by Shiite leaders. While Shiite population comprises majority in Iran and Iraq, a Shiite minority led by Bashar Assad rules Syria. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is an Alevi, a sub-sect of Shia sect. If he becomes the president, Türkiye will be ruled by a Shiite leader, too.
Analysts argue that Kılıçdaroğlu’s proposed organization will be based on faith rather than regional cooperation. They also question why no Sunni and Turkic countries are planned to be included to the organization.
