Erdogan’s warrior to unseat Imamoglu

Istanbul, one of the biggest and most attractive tourist destinations, has been ruled by mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu , who won the elections on behalf of Turkey’s opposition parties gathering under the umbrella of the ‘Nation Alliance’, since 2019. However, polls show that mayor İmamoğlu did not meet expectations of Istanbulites including those voting for him.

The criticism stems from İmamoğlu ’s ambition to be the candidate for presidential elections in 2023 so as to replace Turkey’s strong leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, İmamoğlu ’s negligence of his main duty of serving residents of Istanbul has enraged people as well as CHP’s leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Losing 10 times against Erdogan, Kılıçdaroğlu is very confident that Nation Alliance’s candidate will win upcoming elections, thus he doesn’t want to miss this opportunity.

However, since Imamoglu also wants to face Erdogan in the 2023 elections, there is a rivalry between two, which is about to turn into a war.

While the contention continues in opposition, Erdogan doesn’t seem worried about his victory. Besides, he has appointed a new Istanbul representative for his party, namely Osman Nuri Kabaktepe.  Working with Erdogan for decades, Mr. Kabaktepe continuously pays visits to suburbs of Istanbul and listens to people’s demand.

Mr. Kabaktepe is also an active user of social media. Analysts say that İmamoğlu felt further uncomfortable after Kabaktepe began to be the head of Ak Party in Istanbul. If Kabaktepe continues to unveil İmamoğlu -led municipality’s misdoings like he does now, İmamoğlu or any other CHP candidate will highly likely lose next elections, analysts add.

Osman Nuri Kabaktepe began his political career in Refah Party of late Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan. He remained in successive parties even after Ak Party was established. Kabaktepe later joined Ak Party and eventually chosen by Erdogan to organize Ak Party’s Istanbul network. One of his other missions is to bring back the soul of 1994, with which Refah Party had got landslide victories in municipal elections.
