How Libya helped Turkey for its intervention to Cyprus in 1974

Turkey and Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic celebrate the 50th anniversary of Turkish army’s intervention to Cyprus, which was about to be fully occupied by Greek Cypriots, who were then killing Turkish Cypriots and looting their properties.

During the Peace Operation, mainly the US and NATO stopped the flow of spare parts and jet fuel, thus Libya came into the circuit.

Libyan then leader Muammar Gaddafi informed Turkey that he wanted to give the 2.75 and 5 inch rockets used by the aircraft to Turkey for free.

Thereupon, the seats of four DC9 planes in the Turkish Airlines fleet were removed and turned into cargo planes. These planes immediately flew to Libya.

Approximately 25 tons of 2.75 and 5-inch rockets, which Turkey needed, were loaded onto the planes.

After the Libyan operation, Turkey donated C-47 and F-5 planes. It gave spare parts. These planes served in the Turkish Air Force for many years.

Besides parts, Libyan government had provided fuel to Turkish tanks during the operation.
