Istanbul’s mayor Imamoğlu arrested for $15.5 billion corruption

Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been arrested after three days long interrogation.


Public prosecutor charhed Imamoğlu for corruption and fraud. According to indictment, İmamoğlu and his colleagues embezzled $15.5 billion through tenders. Investigations reveals that Istanbul municipality made certain companies won tenders with high prices. Winners were also asked to transfer some amount to bank account of İmamoğlu’s company.

The amount siphoned from municipality is estimated to be half of revenues of it.

While Imamoğlu player victim and blamed government, complaints about him came from his party, CHP.

Imamoğlu is also blamed to overthrow former CHP chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu by bribing delegates. A new election to choose new CHP head will be held soon.

Meanwhile, trolls under payroll of Imamoğlu or CHP didn’t react much in social media, fearing that their connection might be learned by the police.

Imamoğlu is also charged for illegally transferring money to pro-PKK guys in return for Dem Party’s votes. Dem Party is the political branch of PKK. In case proven, a trustee may replace mayoral post instead of another CHP member.
