Meet Türkiye’s new cabinet

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his new cabinet yesterday.

Only two ministers kept their seats while 15 of them changed.

Head of intelligence became new foreign minister. His post will be filled by Ibrahim Kalin, president’s spokesperson.

Chief of staff became new defense minister. Former minister was once chief of staff, too.

Interior minister Süleyman Soylu was replaced by Istanbul governor Ali Yerlikaya. Soylu is known for his success in struggling terrorism. Soylu and former Housing Minister may compete for mayoral elections for Ankara and Istanbul.

Mehmet Şimşek became new finance minister. Şimşek opposes Erdoğan’s unorthodox economic policies.

There are at least five Kurdish origin ministers. New ministers have more moderate characters, analysts say.
