Nigeria will purchase 43 Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) as part of build-up operations against terrorist groups in the country.
Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, Brigadier General U.G. Ogeleka, disclosed this during the winging ceremony of 22 personnel trained in drone operation and maintenance. He explained that the initiative, codenamed Project Guardian, aims to enhance military efforts against insurgency and other security threats.
Brigadier General Ogeleka revealed that between May and September 2022, 46 officers and soldiers received specialised drone training in Turkey. The crew includes multi-piloted aircraft pilots, mission operators, avionics experts, and engineers.
He added that 14 personnel trained as pilots, seven as mission operators, and 23 as engineers and technicians. While 22 personnel participated in the winging ceremony, others are already deployed on active operational assignments.
