Opposition-run municipality stops housing quake victims after Erdoğan’s lead in elections

Tekirdağ city’s opposition-run municipality will no longer cover hotel costs of quake victims. An official from municipality visited victims in the hotel and announced mayor’s decision yesterday. The decision came after Erdoğan increased his votes in quake-hit region in elections held on last Sunday. People that were kicked off from the hotel protested the municipality. Right after news became viral on social media, Ministry of Interior sent an order to city’s governorate to look after victims.

Meanwhile, many pro-opposition social media accounts showed their outrage to victims. Some influencers said they are regretted for helping them. Some of them even swore at victims. On the other hand, some people from the quake-affected area reimbursed some symbolic money to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s bank account.

President Erdoğan criticized those insulting victims. He also gave the example of Van city, which is pre-dominantly pro-HDP. He said they gave the best service to Van after the earthquake happening 10 years ago despite that people of Van support HDP. Erdoğan added they built a hospital within 3 months in one of quake-hit districts which supported Kılıçdaroğlu by 90%. Erdoğan is planning to make visits to quake-hit area.
