German multinational Siemens has violated its contractual obligations for the supply of equipment to the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, currently under construction in Turkey. This was stated during a press conference by Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak. “Together with Turkish partners, Rosatom quickly conducted all necessary corrective measures and found a solution. Alternative equipment was purchased from friendly countries. Now the first batch of equipment has already been delivered to the Akkuyu nuclear power plant site,” Novak explained.
“Unfortunately, a number of hostile countries are trying to prevent the realization of this dream of the Turkish people” on nuclear power generation, the government official continued. “In particular, we had to deal with a situation where, despite the contract, a supplier from the Western country – Siemens (Germany) – violated its contractual obligations for the supply of a certain type of equipment. Although they are not critical, they are significant for the project. Despite our best efforts and the involvement of the Turkish side, the negotiations did not yield constructive results. The equipment was never delivered to the site,” Novak said. According to the official, Russia and Turkey are assessing the impact of the situation on the overall project schedule. However, the deputy prime minister stressed that the parties will do everything to ensure that all four reactors of the plant are brought online in 2028.
Siemens had admitted that it didn’t supply the components because of German government’s order.
