Haluk Görgün highlighted the critical importance of strong air defense systems like the newly integrated SIPER-1 for Turkey’s security, especially as the nation approaches its 101st anniversary amid escalating global threats.
Haluk Görgün, the head of Turkey’s defense industry and former president of ASELSAN, recently underscored the urgent necessity for robust air defense systems in light of increasing threats, particularly for countries operating nuclear facilities. He announced the official integration of the SIPER-1, a long-range, high-altitude missile system, into Turkey’s defense inventory, which aims to enhance protection against aerial threats. This advancement not only boosts operational capabilities but also reinforces confidence in the nation’s defense strategy. As Turkey prepares to celebrate its 101st anniversary, these developments highlight its commitment to safeguarding sovereignty and establishing a strong presence in the global arena.
In a bold move to strengthen national security, Turkey is racing against time to enhance its air defense systems, as emphasized by Haluk Görgün, former president of ASELSAN and current head of the defense industry. In a recent address, he highlighted the urgent need for robust air defense capabilities in light of the increasing threats faced by nations with nuclear power plants.
Görgün stated that countries operating nuclear facilities cannot afford weak air defense systems. “The moment you establish a nuclear power plant, you must also ensure its air defense is strong. A weak air defense means a vulnerable facility,” he asserted.
Haluk Görgün, the former president of ASELSAN and the current head of the defense sector, stressed the urgency of improving Turkey’s air defense systems.
The Turkish defense industry is making significant strides with the development of the SIPER product line, particularly the SIPER-1, which has officially entered the inventory. This long-range, high-altitude defense missile system is designed to protect against various aerial threats, including fighter jets and cruise missiles. “The SIPER system will act as the shield of our skies,” Görgün declared, underscoring its strategic importance.
Görgün pointed out that nations with nuclear power plants cannot tolerate ineffective air defense mechanisms.
As part of ongoing advancements, SIPER product 2 is currently in development, promising even greater capabilities in air defense. The SIPER systems are set to enhance Turkey’s deterrent power and will serve the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces.
The Turkish defense sector is advancing rapidly with the SIPER product series, especially the SIPER-1, which has now been officially integrated into the inventory.
Görgün emphasized the need for national resilience amid challenges faced by the economy and domestic politics, stating, “If our defense industry and military are solid, we can stand firm.” He further noted that the SIPER system will provide a comprehensive solution to protect the nation from threats, enhancing operational capabilities and boosting confidence in Turkey’s defense.
He also mentioned that the SIPER system will offer a thorough solution for safeguarding the country against threats, improving operational efficiency and increasing trust in Turkey’s defense capabilities.
The SIPER systems were produced by PX Sage, entering the inventory under ASELSAN Rocket Industry’s assurance. Their ability to engage various air-breathing targets and deliver significant strikes from air-to-ground has already garnered attention. The mass production agreements for SIPER product 1 and HISAR projects were signed on December 15, 2023, marking a significant step forward for Turkey’s defense capabilities.
Görgün revealed that the first test launch of SIPER product 1 occurred in November 2021, with subsequent target strikes demonstrating the system’s effectiveness. As Turkey approaches its 101st anniversary as a Republic, the defense industry’s advancements highlight the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty.
As the global landscape changes, Turkey’s commitment to air defense technology establishes it as a strong contender internationally.
With the international landscape evolving, Turkey’s investment in air defense technology positions it as a resilient player on the global stage. As Görgün concluded, “We are entering a new era of air defense capability that will ensure our skies remain protected.”
