Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun: “We hope to revitalise the international system and raise awareness about the design of a new United Nations and Security Council with the panel series so that the United Nations does not share the same fate as its predecessor, the League of Nations.”
The Presidency’s Directorate of Communications will organise a panel series with the theme “The United Nations Security Council Reform: A New Approach to Reconstructing the International Order” in 12 countries.
The first round of the panel series was held in Italy and Argentina in April and June, and the second round will begin with the panel in Paris, France, on August 16.
The panels will continue in London on August 18, Oslo on August 22, Stockholm on August 24, and Amsterdam on August 26.
These panels will be followed by other panels in South Africa, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Spain and Russia. In September, the concluding event will take place in New York within the context of the UN General Assembly.
The purpose of the panel series, which will feature both local and foreign experts in the field, is to connect the international public with Türkiye’s policy toward the UN reform.
Presidency’s Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun said in his statement that Türkiye’s policy towards the UN reform, which President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan embodied with the discourse “The World is Bigger than Five” and “A Fairer World is Possible”, has received serious attention throughout the international community.
Indicating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reveals the dysfunction of the UN system and that it has only symbolic value, Director of Communications Altun said, “We hope to revitalise the international system and raise awareness about the design of a new United Nations and Security Council with the panel series so that the United Nations does not share the same fate as its predecessor, the League of Nations.”
Noting that they will draw attention to the UN’s problems of legitimacy, functionality, effectiveness, inclusiveness, representation, and governance, Director of Communications Altun stated that an emphasis would be placed on the need for comprehensive reform, particularly within the UN Security Council.
Noting that the Directorate of Communications is engaged in an intensive public diplomacy initiative on the reform of the United Nations, the Director of Communications Altun stated that he believed the panel series would have an impact on the international stage.
