Turkish opposition and media continue to discredit Turkish government through attacking state agencies. While they attacked AFAD (Emergency and Disaster Management Agency), now their target is Turkish Red Crescent Kızılay.
Kızılay is criticized for selling rather than donating tents for those made homeless by the massive twin quakes. The Turkish Red Crescent had sold 2,050 tents to the local Ahbap charity for 46 million Turkish liras ($2.4 million). Opposition media claims that tents should have been delivered free of charge.
Turkish Red Crescent head Kerem Kinik responded that “The Red Crescent’s cooperation with Ahbap is moral, reasonable and ethical.”
Turkish people reacted opposition’s demonizing campaigns and defended Kızılay. Some social media users questioned why a pro-opposition charity asks free tents while it has billions of Liras in its money box.
A user said “Tents are free only for people, not for NGOs. If Kızılay gives free tents to NGOs, how will it replace the cost of tents then? When Kızılay makes loss, opposition will then criticize it for the loss”.
Opposition is also criticized for speaking loudly but doing less. Majority of charities in affected area are religious NGOs.
