Azerbaijan’s Su-25 fighter jet has successfully completed a firing test with the SOM-B1 Cruise Missile developed by the Turkish defense industry.
In the statement made by TÜBİTAK on the subject, it was stated that “SOM-B1 was successfully fired from the Azerbaijani Su-25 aircraft with the Pod and Aircraft Independent Firing System (UBAS) developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE.”
According to the information obtained by SavunmaSanayiST, the firing activity was carried out at a test site in Turkey in 2024. The SOM Shahin (Azerbaijan-specific SOM-B1 configuration) Cruise Missile was launched from the Su-25 LACIN Aircraft and successfully hit the long-range target. Thus, the most critical stage for the procurement of the SOM Cruise Missile, which was first announced by Azerbaijan in 2018, has been completed.
Developed by TÜBİTAK-SAGE and mass-produced by Roketsan, SOM is known as Turkey’s first air-launched cruise missile. Azerbaijan’s SOM procurement could not be put into practice due to the embargo on the engine. However, with the introduction of Turkey’s domestically produced Kale KTJ-3200 Turbojet Missile Engine, the way was paved for exports.
