The decision regarding the Steel Dome Layered Air Defense System was taken at the Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) meeting held today under the chairmanship of President Erdoğan.
In the statement made by the Presidency on the subject, the following statements were made: “The ÇELİK KUBBE Project, which we are developing domestically and nationally, which ensures that our layered air defense systems and all our sensors and weapons work integrated with each other under a network structure, create a common air picture, deliver it to the operation centers in real time and present it to decision makers with artificial intelligence support, has been decided.”
What is the Steel Dome?
The Steel Dome is being developed by the Turkish defense industry as a “system of systems”.
According to the information obtained by SavunmaSanayiST.com, the Steel Dome Layered Air Defense System is being developed by the Turkish defense industry. With the Steel Dome, air defence systems such as KORKUT, HİSAR-A+, GÖKDEMİR, GÖKER, GÖKBERK, HİSAR-O+ and SİPER developed by the Turkish defence industry will be able to operate in an integrated manner. In addition to weapon systems, radar and electro-optical systems that perform precise tracking, identification and classification of the target will also operate as a whole within the Steel Dome.
The Steel Dome, which includes many air defense weapon systems, radars, electro-optical systems, communication modules, command and control stations and artificial intelligence, will be Turkey’s brain in the field of air defense.
First Member KORKUT C-RAM
While the development activities of the Steel Dome System continue, test activities were initiated in parallel. In this context, the KORKUT Air Defense Cannon System has made a significant achievement in performing C-RAM (air defense against rocket, artillery and mortar ammunition) missions.
The KORKUT Air Defense Cannon System has been actively used by the Turkish Armed Forces since 2016. ASELSAN has made a number of changes to KORKUT, making the system effective against rocket, artillery and mortar threats known as C-RAM.
During recent tests, KORKUT was successfully tested against an air target in the C-RAM category. Within the scope of the test scenario, the target, which was detected and tracked by radar, was locked and engaged by the KORKUT Weapon System through the AKR Radar on board.
With the 35mm ATOM Smart Munition with an increased number of fragments fired by KORKUT, the aerial target in question was successfully destroyed with a small amount of ammunition. Thus, it has been confirmed that KORKUT, which will be included in the Steel Dome System, can perform the C-RAM mission.
